Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and affects the body’s ability to process sugar (glucose) into energy. This results in high blood sugar levels, which can impact the health of both mother and baby. Typically, blood sugar levels return to normal after delivery. However, women who experience gestational diabetes are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes later in life.

  1. Causes of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs when the body cannot effectively use insulin, the hormone responsible for lowering blood sugar. During pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones that can interfere with insulin function, causing blood sugar levels to rise. When the rise is significant, it can affect the growth and health of the baby.

While any woman can develop gestational diabetes, some factors increase the risk:

    • Age: Women over 25 are more likely to develop gestational diabetes.
    • Family or Personal History: Higher risk if you have prediabetes, a family history of Type 2 Diabetes, a previous gestational diabetes diagnosis, or a history of unexplained stillbirth.
    • Weight: Excess weight increases the likelihood of developing the condition.
  2. Managing Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes can affect both mother and baby, but with proper management, risks can be minimized. Healthy lifestyle choices, including balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and, if necessary, medication, can help control blood sugar levels.

Gaining the right amount of weight during pregnancy is also essential for prevention and management. CosmoMed’s dietitians work closely with expectant mothers to develop trimester-specific meal plans that provide essential nutrients for both mother and baby while preparing for breastfeeding.
